Backup Power Supply for your home is essential now that Eskom has given us a 100% Black Friday Special

The standard installation for a small home is a 5kw Inverter or an 8kw Inverter with 8 to 12 Solar Panels and a 5kwh Lithium Battery.

Many hundreds of homeowners have installed this combo which costs between R 140 000 and R200 000 depending on who your installer is.

I really feel for the townhouse dweller or flat dweller who needs a backup power supply and they are not able to install solar panels. For them the weeks ahead are dark .

We also wanted to come up with a much more affordable solution for the people who want to get on with their lives but simply do not have R 200 000 lying around

We have come up with an inverter solution under R30 000 for people who cannot install solar power for whatever reason, but still want to get on with life as normal. We call it the Power Wall.

The Power Wall comprises a 3kw inverter and a 2.56kwh Lithium battery which installs in a townhouse in 2 hours.

Our electrician (or yours) will install the PowerWall next to your db board, much like a prepaid meter. He will attach the PowerWall to your lighting circuits for your entire house and the plugs of your choice. ( Your kitchen appliances and your Tv plug would be my first prize).

NOTE : The PowerWall is not suited to heaters and geysers, they simply use too much power.

If you do your cooking and heating by gas and depend on the patches of power between loadshedding to heat your geyser, PowerWall will enable you to live you life pretty normally.

How long does the Power last?

The PowerWall will keep your lights, PC and TV, fridge and kitchen appliances (the occasional cup of tea) going for about 5 or 6 hours and will recharge automatically in about 1 hour once the power comes back on.

How long will it take to recharge the battery?

An empty battery should recharge in about an hour when the grid power is restored. If you choose to link up Solar Panels to get free electricity, ( we love that) then your recharging time will depend on the sunlight available and the number of panels you have installed.

SOLAR CHARGING : If you install 2 X 550 W panels, they will take around 2.5 hours to fully charge your PowerWall battery during full sunlight.

How much will it cost?

At the time of writing this article ( November 2023) , the PowerWall costs R 27 969 plus approximately R 2000 for installation by a qualified electrician.

Renewable Energy Resources for the Home in South Africa

As South Africa grapples with the ever-increasing specter of load shedding, the need for alternative energy resources has become more pressing than ever.

While load shedding has become an unfortunate reality, homeowners can take matters into their own hands by harnessing renewable energy sources.

In this article, we will explore the various renewable energy options available for homes in South Africa, with a specific focus on solar power and wind energy.

We will also delve into the importance of energy storage and the crucial role of a solar power audit before investing in renewable energy systems.

The Power of the Sun: Solar Energy for South African Homes

Harnessing the Abundant Solar Energy

South Africa's abundance of sunlight presents a golden opportunity for homeowners to combat load shedding and reduce their reliance on the grid. Solar panels, often referred to as photovoltaic (PV) panels, capture the sun's energy and convert it into electricity.

This clean and renewable energy source has gained significant traction in South Africa, both for residential and commercial applications.

Types of Solar Systems

Grid-Tied Solar Systems: These systems are connected to the municipal grid, allowing homeowners to feed excess electricity back into the grid and receive credits or payment for the energy they produce. Grid-tied systems are a popular choice for those looking to offset their energy bills and cope with load shedding.

Off-Grid Solar Systems: Off-grid systems operate independently of the grid, relying solely on solar panels and battery storage. They are an excellent choice for homes affected by frequent load shedding or in remote locations.

Hybrid Solar Systems: Hybrid systems combine the benefits of grid-tied and off-grid systems. They can store excess energy in batteries while still being connected to the grid for backup power, ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply during load shedding.

Advantages of Solar Power in the Face of Load Shedding

Reduced Dependence on the Grid: Solar power reduces reliance on the grid, making homes more resilient during load shedding.

Steady Supply: With proper energy storage, homeowners can keep the lights on, and maintain a steady electricity supply even when load shedding occurs.

Economic Benefits: Solar power can significantly reduce electricity costs and provide a return on investment over time.

Solar Geysers

In addition to electricity generation, solar energy can also be used to heat water through solar geysers.

These systems use the sun's energy to warm water. The hot water is stored in an insulated geyser to stay hot and ensure hot water after dark and even during load shedding.

Water heating is the major contributor to electrical costs and solar heaters are ideally suited to provide massive cost savings while ensuring a steady supply of hot water to your home .

It's a challenge that South Africans face regularly. Renewable energy, such as solar power and wind energy, can be a lifesaver during load shedding. Solar panels and wind turbines generate electricity independently, reducing reliance on the grid. With energy storage solutions like batteries, excess energy generated during the day can be stored and used during load shedding, ensuring a continuous power supply. This means your lights, appliances, and essential systems can continue to operate even when the grid goes dark, offering both convenience and peace of mind.

Expect to pay approximately R 1000 for a mobile gas heater and R300 for a 9kg gas refill.

Geyser:

Turn down the thermostat on the geyser to approx. 60 degrees. If geyser is set too hot, it uses a tremendous amount of electricity trying to keep the geyser at that temperature.

Install a geyser timer switch on the DB board.

Load shedding has forced us all to secure our power supply.

In today's fast-paced world, uninterrupted power supply is crucial. Load shedding can disrupt daily life and business operations. In such scenarios, having a reliable backup power solution becomes paramount.

Inverters, devices that convert stored energy into usable electricity during power cuts, have become essential. To ensure the effectiveness of inverters, the choice of battery is critical.

In this article, we will explore the best battery options for inverters during load shedding, their pros, cons, and which types are most suitable for different situations.

Types of Batteries for Inverters

When it comes to powering inverters during load shedding, several battery options are available.

Let's check out the options:

Typical Lead-Acid Car Batteries

These batteries are commonly found in automobiles and are designed to provide high bursts of power to start engines.

However, they are not optimal for prolonged power supply during load shedding.

Their primary function is to deliver quick and intense bursts of energy, making them unsuitable for sustained use.

Using car batteries for inverters can lead to quick drainage and reduced overall lifespan.

Pros:

Widely available.

Relatively affordable.

Cons:

Short lifespan when used inverter applications.

Limited energy storage capacity.

Deep Cycle Lead-Acid Batteries ("Maintenance-Free")

Deep cycle lead-acid batteries are designed to provide a steady and continuous flow of energy over an extended period.

They are commonly referred to as "maintenance-free" due to their sealed design, which reduces the need for regular maintenance.

These batteries offer a balance between cost-effectiveness and performance, making them suitable for smaller home and office inverters during load shedding.

Pros:

Decent energy storage capacity.

Suitable for moderate power requirements.

Cons:

Limited lifespan compared to other advanced options.

Requires periodic replacement.

Gel Batteries

Gel batteries are a type of lead-acid battery that uses a gel-like electrolyte, which provides better stability and resistance to vibration.

These batteries are designed for deep cycling and are a step up from traditional lead-acid batteries in terms of lifespan and performance.

However, they might not offer the same efficiency and longevity as lithium batteries.

Pros:

Longer lifespan compared to traditional lead-acid batteries.

Low maintenance requirements.

Cons:

Lower energy density than lithium batteries.

Higher initial cost.

Lithium Batteries

Lithium batteries have gained immense popularity in recent years due to their exceptional energy density, longer lifespan, and lighter weight.

They are ideal for powering inverters during load shedding, especially for larger systems.

Despite their high cost, their longevity and efficiency make them a valuable investment for uninterrupted power supply.

Pros:

Longest lifespan among available options.

High energy density and efficiency.

Cons:

Expensive upfront cost.

Requires proper management to prevent overcharging and overheating.

Choosing the Right Battery for Your Needs

When selecting a battery for your inverter during load shedding, it's essential to consider your power requirements, budget, and long-term goals.

If you're looking for a cost-effective solution for short power cuts, deep cycle lead-acid batteries are a suitable choice.

They strike a balance between performance and affordability.

On the other hand, if longevity and higher energy capacity are your priorities, lithium batteries offer the best value over time, even though they come with a higher initial investment.

Conclusion

In conclusion, choosing the right battery for your inverter during load shedding can greatly impact the effectiveness and longevity of your backup power solution.

While various battery options are available, it's clear that lithium batteries stand out for their exceptional lifespan and energy efficiency.

Despite being expensive upfront, their long-term benefits make them an excellent choice for those seeking uninterrupted power supply during extended outages.

However, for smaller home and office setups, deep cycle lead-acid batteries provide a reliable and cost-effective option.

Remember, car-type lead-acid batteries are not suitable since they are designed to provide on short bursts of high power to start cars.

When making your decision, consider your power requirements, budget, and long-term goals to ensure you have a dependable backup power solution in times of load shedding.

Have a look at our <a href="https://powerinabox.co.za/pricing/"

In a world where electricity powers virtually everything we use, devices like inverters play a crucial role in ensuring a consistent and efficient power supply. You might have heard the term "inverter" before, but what exactly is it? In this article, we'll dive into the world of inverters, exploring their purpose, how they work at home, their different types, and some commonly asked questions.

Understanding the Purpose of an Inverter

An inverter, simply put, is an electronic device that converts direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC). This transformation is vital because many of our home appliances and electronics run on AC power, while sources like batteries provide DC power. In essence, an inverter acts as a bridge, allowing us to use DC power from sources like batteries to run AC-powered devices, such as laptops, refrigerators, and televisions.

How Does an Inverter Work at Home?

For the technical enthusiasts, here's a closer look at how inverters work. Inverters use a combination of electronic components to convert DC to AC. They utilize switches, such as metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) or insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), to rapidly switch the DC input on and off. This switching creates a waveform that resembles AC power. However, the quality of this waveform varies depending on the type of inverter.

The Merits of Pure Sine Wave Inverters

For the technical aficionados, let's delve into the benefits of pure sine wave inverters. These inverters produce a clean and smooth sine wave output that replicates the quality of utility grid power. This matters because many sensitive electronics, like laptops and medical equipment, require a stable and clean power supply to function optimally. Pure sine wave inverters eliminate the risk of damaging equipment due to irregular power output, making them an excellent choice for both residential and commercial use.

In contrast, modified sine wave inverters produce a stepped waveform that might not be compatible with certain electronics. This type of inverter is suitable for basic appliances, but it can cause issues with more delicate devices. Therefore, if you're looking for a versatile and reliable power source, investing in a pure sine wave inverter is a wise choice.

What is an Inverter in Simple Words?

In simpler terms, an inverter is like a translator for electricity. Imagine you have a friend who only speaks one language, while you understand another. An inverter steps in and translates your language into your friend's language so you can communicate effectively. Similarly, it takes the energy from sources like batteries (which speak the language of direct current, DC) and translates it into a form that household appliances can understand (alternating current, AC).

Does an Inverter Need a Battery?

This brings us to a common question: does an inverter need a battery to function? The answer depends on the type of inverter and its purpose. Standalone inverters, which are commonly used for backup power during outages, require a battery to store the converted energy. When the grid power goes out, the inverter draws energy from the battery and converts it to AC power for your devices.

On the other hand, grid-tied inverters used in solar power systems don't necessarily need batteries. These inverters convert the DC power generated by solar panels into AC power that can be used in your home or fed back into the grid. Batteries can be added to these systems for energy storage, but they aren't a requirement for basic grid-tied functionality.

Conclusion

Inverters are the unsung heroes of our modern power-hungry Load shedding world. They enable us to use various devices and appliances seamlessly by converting DC power into the AC power that our homes and businesses rely on. Whether it's the convenience of running electronics during a blackout or the efficiency of solar power systems, inverters play a vital role in keeping our lives powered.

For those interested in exploring further, products like the Home Inverter and seeking guidance from South Africa's inverter and solar energy experts can offer valuable insights. Additionally, understanding South Africa's solar tax breaks and the impact of increasing load shedding is essential in navigating the energy landscape.

One common use is during power outages. By connecting an inverter to a battery, you can ensure a backup power supply to keep essential devices running when the main power grid fails. Inverters are also crucial in renewable energy systems, like solar panels. They convert the DC power generated by solar panels into AC power that can be used in your home or fed back into the grid. Furthermore, if you're on the move, inverters come in handy to power your devices from a vehicle's battery, making road trips and camping experiences much more comfortable.

Additionally, cheaper or modified sine wave inverters can produce a less smooth waveform, which might cause issues or inefficiencies with sensitive electronic devices. Moreover, inverters that rely on batteries for backup power require maintenance and replacement over time, adding to the overall cost. Lastly, inverters that feed excess energy back into the grid might require special equipment and monitoring to ensure compatibility and safety.

In a world where energy demands are on the rise and concerns about the environment are growing, the idea of going off the electricity grid is gaining momentum. South Africa, with its frequent load shedding and increasing utility costs, is no exception. This comprehensive guide will take you through the steps, costs, and benefits of liberating your home from the traditional power grid and embracing a self-sustained energy solution.

The Motivations for Going Off the Grid in South Africa:

Load Shedding and Infrastructure Challenges:The foremost motivation for going off the grid in South Africa stems from the persistent issue of load shedding. The frequent power cuts, attributed to a lack of planning and maintenance by the national utility company, Eskom, have disrupted daily life and strained productivity. As load shedding remains a long-standing concern, many individuals seek to take control of their energy supply to mitigate its impact.

Escalating Electricity Prices:Another compelling motivation is the steady increase in electricity prices announced by Eskom . South Africans have faced rising utility costs, affecting household budgets and financial stability. Going off the grid offers relief from unpredictable pricing models, allowing homeowners to lock in their energy costs and achieve greater financial certainty over the long term.

Corruption and Inefficiency:The energy sector in South Africa has been marred by corruption and inefficiency, leading to mismanagement and compromised service delivery. Individuals who choose to go off the grid are driven by a desire to escape the grip of a system fraught with challenges and uncertainty. By investing in their own energy solutions, they regain autonomy over their power supply.

Skill Deficiency and Political Challenges:The lack of specialized industry skills and political will within South Africa's energy sector has hindered the development of reliable and sustainable energy sources. This dearth of expertise has contributed to ongoing energy crises, propelling those who seek energy independence to explore off-grid options that put control back into their hands.

Reducing Stress and Enhancing Quality of Life:Beyond the tangible challenges, the emotional toll of load shedding cannot be underestimated. The stress it adds to daily living, studying, and office productivity is considerable. Choosing to go off the grid is a proactive step toward reducing this stress, enhancing overall well-being, and fostering a more stable environment for personal and professional pursuits.

Step 1: Assess Your Energy Needs:The first step toward going off the grid is to understand your energy requirements. Take a closer look at your daily energy consumption by considering the appliances you use, lighting, heating, and cooling needs. This assessment will help you determine the size of the solar system and battery storage necessary to meet your household's energy demands.

Step 2: Solar Panels and Home Solar Solutions:Embracing solar energy is a cornerstone of off-grid living. The number of solar panels you'll need depends on factors like your energy consumption and the efficiency of the panels. A basic calculation involves dividing your daily energy consumption by the average daily output of a solar panel. Reputable providers like Home solar solutions offer customizable packages to suit your needs.

Step 3: Battery Storage Planning:To ensure uninterrupted power supply, you'll need effective battery storage. Calculate the required battery capacity by estimating your energy needs during periods when sunlight isn't available. A smart approach involves storing excess energy generated during the day for nighttime use. This strategy reduces reliance on the grid even during cloudy days.

Step 4: Solar Tax Breaks and Incentives:South Africa acknowledges the importance of renewable energy and offers solar tax breaks and incentives to incentivize its adoption. These incentives can significantly offset the initial investment costs of going off-grid. Investigate available tax benefits and rebates that can make your transition more financially viable. Learn more from informative resources like South Africa Solar tax breaks.

It is a very god indication of how dire the circumstances are and how bad it has become very quickly. By 9 May , we had already caught up to the total blackout time for last year. Have a look at 2020 and 2021 , they look quite similar, but the writing was on the wall. 2020 had a total of 5.2 days, and 2021 had a total of 7.4 days -That is 22% worse than the year before !!!! The total days of blackout for 2022 were 34.56 , that’s a whopping 4.6 time worse than 2021 !! In 2023 we reached the 2022 total of 34.56 days by 9 May …its game over! What has government done? In June the loadshedding eased off significantly, due to more power facilities coming back online, but unfortunately, I believe that is a temporary respite, until another power station breaks down. No extra power generating capacity has been added, and the government seems to be doing everything in its power to add red tape and court battles to stop the private sector from generating its own power. Since we appointed an Electricity Minister earlier this year, apart from talking a lot, and earning a nice salary he hasn’t managed to do much about the crisis. Recently in the news he was seen shaking hands with his Mozambiquan counterpart to seal the deal whereby South Africa will be purchasing an additional 100MW starting now (that’s 0.1 GigaWatt) building up to 1GigaWatt later in the year. To put that into perspective, South Africa has a theoretical capacity of around 54 Gigawatts but it is in poor condition so today (19 June) we only have 25 000 GW available while today’s peak demand is 29 Gigawatts. This leaves a loadshedding shortfall of 2 GigaWatts today, so I am sorry to say Mr Electricity Minister, the 0.1 Gigawatt you organised is not going to help very much. " target="_blank" class="" style="outline: none;">Bussinesstech graph tracks the accumulated blackout time in South Africa for the last 4 years. It is a very good indication of how dire the circumstances are and how bad load shedding has become very quickly.

By the 9th of May, load shedding in 2023 had won the run chase, "with 30 overs remaining"!

By 9 May 2023, we had already caught up to the total blackout time for last year.

When comparing the line for 2020 and 2021, they look quite similar, but the writing was on the wall. 2020 scored a total of 5.2 days, and 2021 scored 7.4 days -That is 42% worse than the year before !!!!

The total days of blackout for 2022 was 34.56, that’s a whopping 4.6 times worse than 2021 !!

In 2023 we reached the 2022 total of 34.56 days by 9 May … its game over! - Yes, load shedding will continue for the foreseeable future.

2. Your appliances will then operate normally during load shedding events. While the power grid is on, your batteries will automatically recharge. Lithium batteries recharge very quickly, normally within about an hour, ready for the next blackout.

A medium sized home will use about 30 KWh per day, but most of that will be used by your geyser. The normal medium sized household consumption (excluding geyser) is aproximately 400W – 700W .

By installing a good quality inverter and battery in your house to power your essential appliance load of say 400W, you can ensure that life goes on pretty much normally during extended hours of load shedding.

A 5 KW inverter with a 3KWh to 5KWh lithium battery is a good place to start.

An appliance load of 400W for 10 hours of backup will require 400 X 10 = 4000 Wh or 4Kwh. Lithium batteries allow you to use about 80% of the rated battery capacity, so a 5KWh battery would suffice in this instance.

Your geyser would remain on the power grid, and would be warmed up only when the power grid is functioning. Heat will be stored up in your geyser for when you need it, so your geyser would function as a “heat battery”.

A fully installed Home Inverter system together with an Electrical Compliance Certificate (COC) will cost from R68000 – A COC is essential to make sure the installation is done properly and that the installation doesn’t nullify your home insurance policy.

Step 4 – Solar home system

By adding solar panels to match your installed inverter you can start converting the sun’s energy into useful electricity to run your home.

An added benefit is the huge government incentives designed to encourage the public to invest in renewable energy supplies. Until 1 March 2024, 25% of the cost of your solar panels can be claimed as a tax rebate.

8 X 550 W Solar panels should provide you with approximately 3000 Watts for 6 hours per day in sunny conditions. That equates to about 18 KWh per day, which is more than the requirements to run the essential appliances of a medium sized home. ( eg 500 W appliance load for 24 hours = 12KWh per day )

Cost of installation of solar panels, inverters and Lithium batteries varies dramatically dependent on the quality of equipment you install and your individual requirements, but you can expect to start at around R 100 000.

A power audit will establish your individual needs. [Click here to enquire for a system that most resembles your requirements and receive a free power audit.]

Step 5 OFF THE GRID with a Solar System plus Geyser Heat Pump

If your solar system is well balanced with your current essential appliance load, then you only have to add additional solar power to cover the non essentials like pool pumps and geysers.

A normal 150 to 200 L geyser uses 9KWh to heat your geyser. It will use about 3KW for 3 hours to heat up your geyser from cold to full temperature of around 65 degrees. [3KW X 3hrs = 9KWh]

A heat pump works on the same principal as an airconditioner. An air conditioner extracts heat from inside and transfers it outside into the atmosphere. A heat pump extracts heat from the air outside and transfers it to your geyser.

A heat pump will cost you R25000 installed and will typically only use 1KW for 3 hours, or 3KWh per day to keep you in hot water.

Your pool pump will use about 1KW and can be set to run during sunlit hours. 2 or 3 extra 500W panels will cover the pool pump load easily.

Step 6 Completely off the power grid

Completely off the grid is very expensive to achieve as you need to not only provide enough solar for daily consumption and keep your batteries 100% topped up, but you need to have reserve battery capacity to last during cloudy rainy weather.

Depending on your location, you may have to allow for up to 7 days "rainy day" extra battery capacity or add a diesel/petrol generator to your system.

Power in a Box have an OFF THE GRID solution starting at around R250 000

Take back the power!

This article is to be seen as a general guide only, a starting point to help you get your head around the requirements, and costs involved of getting off the power grid and taking back control of your life.

Every household would require a power audit to establish your power requirements and then a system that can grow incrementally can be designed to suit your power needs.

Pylon theft is now added to the list . Thieves are literally cutting supporting struts off our power pylons resulting in massive failures as pylons collapse like they did in Pretoria east this weekend when 7 pylons collapsed across the highway, effectively stopping all traffic and power.

Surely somebody is buying the copper and pylon struts? Effective policing at every scrap dealer with massive penalties for scrap dealers who are complicit in this crime will surely stop cable and pylon theft in its tracks.

Corruption

Corruption in Eskom and government has been extensively reported in the media like Carte Blanche, but nobody is being brought to book.

Where there is smoke there is fire, and there seems to be lots of smoke!

Capacity

According to our minister, Eskom is only capable of supplying around 27,000 MW and yet our winter demand is around 37,000 MW . With existing shortages like this, planned maintenance is severely affected resulting in Eskom groping in the dark from one emergency to another. As any engineer will tell you, emergencies are very expensive -and open to massive corruption, as the tender process gets compromised by the urgent nature of the emergency.

Our situation

Clearly our power problem is complex and unlikely to be solved quickly.

Covid resulted in many people having to adjust to working from home, and now those same people have to adjust to loadshedding. As a business owner I can testify that It is extremely difficult to run a business when your work-from-home staff are all being loadshed at different times.

High schools and Universities have also shifted their focus to online work since covid. Before we solved our loadshedding problem at home, my 16 year old son suffered severe stress as he juggled his online homework assignments with the loadshedding schedule.

Townhouse Dwellers have it especially hard. They cannot use generators and “installing solar” is simply not an option. Stuck in the dark!

The solution

We have a solution to this dilemma, which is a staged approach to loadshed-proofing your home office, your student and your household TV and WIFI connectivity.

Step 1

Step 1 would be a Power in a Box UPS inverter capable of giving you at least 4 hours backup power. Your inverter battery will be charged by the power grid when it is on, and will then keep the power on for your essentials during loadshedding events.

Step 2

Adding a portable 200W solar panel, would give extra protection from extended blackouts (stage 10 loadshedding or cable theft events). This solar panel could be propped up on a townhouse balcony during an extended blackout or placed in your garden to charge your Inverter battery while it supplies continues power to you.

Then after the sun goes down you will still have 4 hours of power available for the evenings.

Put your lights back on

Find out how you can personally put the lights back on in your home, office, factory or farm.

Get more info here [click here]
